5th Fix

[The phone picks up, but there's a few moments of shuffling and the moving of things as Quinn drags the phone to the garage. Sadly no one has told him he can filter his calls.]

Hey guys! It's come to my attention that some folks 'round here like usin' swords. While I ain't the fightin' type, I can tell why ya'd want somethin' like that around, 'specially if ya ain't used to guns or whatever.

So, I've decided that I'm gonna build somethin' like a forge! I figure, the only thing we got in Mayfield in the way of scrap metal is cars, right? So, we've got access to a lot of steel and chrome and such. We can probably make some lightweight, tough swords for ya'll! Like katanas, I guess.

Here's where ya'll come in. While I can build a whole lotta stuff, swords are new to me. I'm lookin' for someone who knows stuff like how to design 'em. Get the weight and size right, stuff I can use for the hilts, things like that! Computers are my specialty really, but I do pretty good buildin' other stuff too. So if you're interested, ya can call me back, but it's probably better if ya just come over to the garage at 339 Brady Lane, cuz that's where I'll be. If ya got any spare metal or whatever, bring that along. I'm not expecting payment, but some company, some supplies or maybe even some snacks or somethin' would be great! Thanks, guys.

[If you stop by, Quinn will be merrily dismantling parts in his garage, his laptop set up and playing music like usual - but at an acceptable volume level this time.]

[he has, of course, replaced it. Not used the same one for hundreds of years (partly because he got taller and stronger and could handle heavier or harder to handle ones.)

Thinking... He's not going to write any of that down, and those people seem to have a hard time simply remembering longer descriptions, stories, or just details. It is like all the letters suck out their memory.

He's not going to do that much writing. It'll take him forever.]
W' can do th't together.

Sure, man. Ya know where to find me. Stop by when ya get the chance!

Aft'r school.

[commentlog?]

here is fine!

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me. See ya then!

[You'll find him puttering away in the garage, music playing, sorting through his scrap metal.

[Sweden hears the music and just guesses that he'll find the man there. He's right.]

Hej.

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there! Have a seat. [He waves you over. He's sitting on the floor, dismantling car parts with his tools. He points out a lawn chair to you, though.]

So, I'm startin' to think I need to build a bigger forge. People seem really interested in this, and not just for weapons. Know much about forges?

[Medieval guys totally do, right?]

[identity profile] sveariket.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
'm no blacksmith. [The answer is yes, he does, but he's not as good as humans that do that all their life can become, more cut out for the everyday blacksmith bussiness than anything special.]

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not, but maybe ya know more than I do. Which is to say, if you've ever used one before or gotten closer to one, you might! Cuz all I've seen is one at the Renaissance Fair once... don't think that counts, but it's close enough. But, I know I can figure it out. Shouldn't be too hard, right?

[identity profile] sveariket.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Y' can injure yerself badly. D' y' know what y' need?

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, all that fire? Gotta be careful.

[He stops to think for a moment.] I figure, some bricks to build it, charcoal for fuel... gotta have an open spot underneath to fan the flames, right? To get the air in. A bellows, right?

[identity profile] sveariket.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Y' 'll need a servant fer th' bellows. [The temperature has to be extremely constant for some steps, or the whole piece that one's working on will be gone.]

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Servant"? How about "helpful volunteer"? If people want swords, they better be willing to. Gettin' this goin' from the ground up is gonna take a lot of work.

[Work. Work? This is Quinn Hatch. Oh, he'll find someone to do this work for him. Laziness is his middle name.]

[identity profile] sveariket.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Nods. That sounds reasonable.]

Th' plan.

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll put aside collecting any more metal until we get the whole forge business down pat. I'm gonna go pick up some bricks and stuff at the hardware store later. I wonder if I can get some books at the library on stuff like this?

[identity profile] techno-mancer.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's... like, a place to rent books. We gotta catch you up on a lot of this modern stuff, man!

[identity profile] sveariket.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
...'m teacher mentioned 't.
